BEST OF RAGTAG PARKS: Harkness Memorial State Park

Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford is by far my favorite state park in the area. I still have a few more to explore, but I'm not sure you can beat the ocean views, beautiful historic mansion and buildings, and gorgeous gardens that are located on these grounds.  Nice clean bathrooms and tons of picnic tables with natural shade also bring this one to the top of my list.

Park:
  • With regards to the entrance/parking fee, there's usually no one manning the booth during off hours/season. If there is the cost is $9 Residents/$15 Non-residents on weekends and $6R/$10NR on weekdays. The price changes after 4pm.
  • There are so many things you and your family can do at the park.
    • Picnic - Tons of picnic tables in the park with grills (don't forget to bring your own charcoal!).
    • Bike - Take a family bicycle ride along the paved and dirt paths.
    • Sports - Bring kites, balls, frisbees, chalk, etc.
    • Explore - Discover the property's Gardens, Mansion, and other historic buildings(tours available during the summer).
    • Beach - No swimming allowed, but a perfect place to collect shells and skip rocks!

Conveniences:
  • Nice clean bathrooms with about 10 stalls. Bathrooms are located next to parking lot (I believe there's a changing table in handicap stall, but I prefer to change the baby's diaper outdoors if I can!)
  • Porta-potties also located near beach entrance.
  • Pets are allowed (must pick-up after them).
Things to Remember:
  • Bring trash bags! There are a couple dumpsters near the beach, but the park has a bring-in/take-out policy with trash.
  • Great place to bring out-of-town guests!
